Two Cultures


I initially applied to UCLA because of its incredible film program, but once I started my freshman year and explored the Psychology Department I found a second reason to love UCLA. Despite being informed by the school of theater, film, and television that film majors aren’t permitted to double major, after numerous petitions and a letter to the board, I’ve been approved to study psychology alongside film. I’ve also taken on a minor in entrepreneurship because I believe that a background in business will greatly aid my future career path. Ultimately, my goal is to work as an Executive Creative Producer at a media/tech company like Disney, Apple, or Google. 

Top Presentation Design Trends of 2022

It is interesting to see how these two cultures are separated at UCLA. When I travel across campus from a film class to a psychology class, North and South campus feel like two different worlds. Buckminster Fuller’s statement that “the further art advances the closer it approaches science, the further science advances the closer it approaches art” resonated with me because it highlights the irony in campus being so separated. The more advanced and technical that editing, cinematography, and sound design become, the closer film approaches science.

 Similarly, although Psychology has many scientific elements, the more complicated the mental health crisis becomes, the more artistic creativity is needed to problem solve.

Creative Art Therapy: A Career That Combines Art with Helping Others

 These two cultures should not be isolated from one another because they are so much more effective when combined together.

  Neuroscience + Art When the fields of neuroscience and art are bridged, they are able to create experiences that could never otherwise be created by either field on its own. Although neuroscientists have explored the consciousnesses and biological makeup of the other sentient beings that accompany us on this Earth, the information gathered has largely been confined within academic articles and research papers.  While artists have captured the essence of other sentient beings within paintings and sculptures, the art typically positions the beholder as an observant.  Neither field has truly or effectively approached the philosophical dilemma regarding humans’ ability to embody the experiences of other sentient beings. Space + Art Although only recently has commercial space travel become more accessible, space art has a remarkably long history. Amid astronauts and billionaires, like Jeff Bezos, exploring the wonders of the void above, artists have ventured into exploring what art looks like in the context of the universe.  Jeff Bezos Space Travel When space and art are explored together, the unique components each entity contributes allows for innovative discoveries that could never otherwise be created by either entity on its own. A number of artists have launched their art into space to be appreciated against the infinitely black and vast canvas above.
